The story

Ringeltaube Vethamonikam Memorial Church in Mylaudy, Kanyakumari district, is the cathedral of the Church of South India's Kanyakumari Diocese and one of the oldest churches in the region. It traces its origins to the German missionary William Tobias Ringeltaube, who laid the foundation of a church here in May 1809, regarded as the first Protestant church in South Travancore. Villagers built it by night after their day's work, finishing it within four months, and about 40 people were baptised on the day it was completed. Mylaudy was also the London Missionary Society's local headquarters.

The first building, 40 by 12 feet, was replaced on the same site, and the rear was extended in the form of a cross in 1932. The present cruciform church, 120 feet long and 45 feet wide, was begun in 1966 and took over 25 years to finish, opening on 27 September 1991. It became a cathedral on 25 April 2006, a date now kept each year as Ringeltaube Vethamonikam Memorial Day.
