Mukkadal Dam holds back the Vambaru River near Thuvarankadu village in Kanyakumari district, about 10 km from Nagercoil. It was built in 1945 by the Travancore king, Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, as an earthen dam of clay and granite stones. Its reservoir supplies Nagercoil with water; the capacity, first 84 mcft, was raised to 105 mcft in 1979.
The dam and its reservoir sit against a backdrop of forest, with hills closing in on three sides, and there is a park right beside the dam.
