The story

Biodiversity Park in Visakhapatnam is a 3-acre botanical garden and ex situ conservation park inside the grounds of the Rani Chandramani Devi Government Hospital, the first of its type in the city. Opened on 5 June 2002, it is looked after by the Dolphin Nature Conservation Society together with the hospital and the city's metropolitan development authority, and serves students and researchers as a living laboratory.

The park is laid out in ten major zones and holds more than 2,000 plant species, among them sacred-grove plants, around 500 medicinal plants, cacti and succulents, ferns, bamboo and palm groves, aquatic plants including Victoria amazonica, pitcher plants and an arboretum. The rare maidenhair tree grows beside curiosities like Krishna's butter cup, the upside-down tree and the Mickey Mouse tree, and there are a pond, a greenhouse and a cactus house. Some 60 bird species and 105 butterfly species have been seen here. Cyclone Hudhud wrecked the park in 2014, and student volunteers restored it within a year with government help.
