01 — The story

The story

The Chaurasi Kutia Ashram, named for its 84 cottages and better known as the Beatles Ashram, sits in the forest at Rishikesh. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi taught transcendental meditation here, and the Beatles stayed from February to April 1968, writing most of the songs for their self-titled double album, known as the White Album.

The ashram has been abandoned since the 1990s. A steep path leads up to its 84 beehive-shaped meditation huts, which once housed the Maharishi's students and are now painted with graffiti and Beatles lyrics. The old lecture hall, called the Beatles Cathedral, holds street art, paintings and poetry.
