01 — The story

The story

Bagore Ki Haveli is an 18th-century mansion beside Lake Pichola at Gangaur Ghat in Udaipur. It was built by Amar Chand Badwa, then prime minister of Mewar, and in 1878 Maharaj Shakti Singh of Bagore enlarged it and added its triple-arched gateway, which is how it got its present name.

The building was made by local craftsmen with stone, mud and wood, and has carved jharokha balconies facing the lake. After extensive restoration it now works as a museum, with more than 100 rooms showing costumes, jewellery, paintings and manuscripts. Its courtyard has been turned into an open-air stage, where an evening programme of folk music, dance and puppetry is held. Boat rides on the lake start close by.
