Gowalia Tank Maidan, officially August Kranti Maidan, is a park off Grant Road in South Mumbai and one of the key sites of India's freedom struggle. On 7 August 1942 the All India Congress Committee met here under Maulana Azad in a session that ran past midnight. The next day, 8 August, Gandhi gave the call for the Quit India movement, telling the crowd that the mantra was do or die, and that India would be freed or they would die trying.
The call set off mass civil disobedience against British rule during the Second World War. The ground lies only about 250 metres from Gokuldas Tejpal House, where the Indian National Congress was founded in 1885. Its old name comes from the tank that once stood here, where cattle owners, the gowalas, brought their cows to bathe; the present maidan was laid over it.
