01 — The story

The story

Mani Bhavan is a two-storey house on Laburnum Road in Gamdevi, Mumbai, that belonged to Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri, a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. From 1917 to 1934 it was where Gandhi stayed when in the city, and many events of the freedom movement were planned here.

Today the house is a memorial. The ground floor holds a museum and a library holding more than 40,000 volumes about Gandhi and allied themes; the first floor has an auditorium for films, meetings and seminars. On the second floor the room Gandhi lived and worked in is preserved, next to a gallery telling his life through miniature figures. Gandhi was arrested on the terrace of the house in 1932.
