The story

The Aqsa Mosque in Qadian, Gurdaspur district, is the town's oldest and largest mosque. It stands inside the compound of the ancestral house of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, founder of the Ahmadiyya movement, close to the White Minaret in Qadian's Ahmadiyya quarter. His father, Mirza Ghulam Murtaza, built it in 1876 on land bought at auction that had earlier held a prison.

The first loudspeaker was installed in January 1938, an occasion marked by a sermon from the second Ahmadiyya caliph, Mirza Basheer-ud-Din Mahmood Ahmad. Through the 20th century the community renovated and enlarged the mosque again and again, so that a building first meant for about 200 worshippers could hold some 15,000 by 2014.
