Ambroli Church in Girgaum, Mumbai, was started by the Scottish missionary John Wilson in 1831 and now belongs to the Church of North India. The name comes from Ambroli House, his home nearly opposite the present building, where the first service was held on 6 February 1831. Ambroli itself is believed to refer to the Gujarati home town of migrants to the city.
The first members were a striking mix: the Wilsons themselves, John and Margaret, three Konkan Brahman men, a Wani merchant, a Vaishya journalist, a Maratha woman, an African sailor and a former Roman Catholic priest. Services ran in Hindustani, Marathi and English. Wilson's educational mission was also planned at this site, leading to Wilson College and Wilson High School. Later pastors included Dhanjibhai Nauroji and Madhavrao B. Nikambe, and the present building dates from 1869.
