01 — The story

The story

The Ahar Museum in Udaipur holds objects recovered from the prehistoric Ahar culture of the region, with pieces as old as about 1700 BC. Its role is both to display and to protect these remains, which shed light on how the Ahar people lived, worshipped and made art.

The collection includes pottery, sculpture, metal objects and inscriptions, along with architectural fragments from various periods. A highlight is a metal figure of the Buddha from the tenth century, found in the area. Guided tours explain the background of the exhibits. The museum stands near the Ahar royal cenotaphs, so the two are easily seen together.
