01 — The story

The story

Warangal Fort is what remains of the capital of the Kakatiya dynasty, which ruled much of the Deccan from the late 12th century until the 1320s. The city was ringed by concentric walls, one of them built in the reign of Rudrama Devi, and it withstood a series of invasions before its fall. Traces of the dynasty's water management survive alongside temples and carved remains.

The best-known features are the four Kakatiya Kirti Toranas, ornate gateways about 30 feet tall whose pillars are each cut from a single block of stone. Around them lie the ruins of the Swayambhu Shiva temple, dated to 1162, an open-air museum of sculpture, and the Shambhulingeshwara temple with a large Nandi facing its linga. Khush Mahal, a later hall, stands a short walk away. In the evening a 50-minute sound and light show tells the story of the Kakatiya rulers in Telugu and English.
