01 — The story

The story

Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary takes its name from the Kinnerasani River, which runs through its forests in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, formerly part of Khammam. Wooded hills enclose the reserve, and the Kinnerasani Dam stands close by, its reservoir reflecting the forest on the surrounding slopes.

Sambar and other deer graze along the river, while leopards, sloth bears, wild boar and tigers are among the larger mammals, though the shyer species are seen only with luck. It is also a good place for birdwatching, with Indian rollers, peafowl, spoonbills and seasonal migrants. Walking trails lead through tall forest to quiet stopping places by the water, and the dam gives a wide view over the reservoir and hills.
