The story

Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary protects about 806 sq km of forest in Mulugu district and was declared in 1953, making it one of the older sanctuaries in India. Much of it is rolling upland under thick woodland, including some of the country's best teak, while the remainder is cut by springs and streams. The Dayyam Vagu stream runs through the reserve, and Laknavaram Lake lies on its edge.

Animals recorded here include gaur, giant squirrels, sloth bears, blackbuck, chinkara and tigers, and the birdlife is varied. Jeep safaris run through the forest. Within the sanctuary are megalithic dolmens and fossilised tree remains in the Sarvai area. Every two years it hosts the Sammakka Saralamma Jatara, a tribal festival counted among the largest gatherings of its kind in Asia.
