Laknavaram Lake lies beside Laknavaram village in Mulugu district, about 70 km from Warangal, surrounded by forested hills. It dates from the Kakatiya period, when the rulers built many tanks to guard against drought: three narrow valleys were closed with small embankments, and the reservoir gathered rain and the flow of nearby streams to water the farmland around it, a role it kept under later administrations.
The lake is dotted with islets covered in vegetation that look as if they are floating and support a range of plants and animals. A suspension bridge crosses to a central islet, and paddle boats and motorboats are available, with resorts and other lodging nearby. Local stories credit Sage Agastya with making the lake and say only the pure-hearted can see its beauty; another tells of a merchant's treasure lost beneath the water.
