01 — The story

The story

Kuntala Waterfall drops about 147 feet (45 m) over two rock steps on the Kadam River in the forests of Adilabad district, and is regarded as the highest waterfall in Telangana. The stream gathers from a cluster of pools before it reaches the edge. The falls lie roughly 260 km, or some six hours by road, from Hyderabad, and about 100 rough stone steps lead down to the base.

The name is traced to Shakuntala, wife of King Dushyanta in the Mahabharata, who is said to have stopped here, been taken with the falls and bathed in them regularly. The surrounding area is home to tribal communities who have long treated the falls as sacred, praying here for good fortune and gathering for celebrations. Local folklore also tells of two lovers from feuding tribes who met in secret beneath the cascade.
