01 — The story

The story

Veraval Lighthouse stands on the Arabian Sea approximately 2.5 km west of the harbour at Veraval in Gujarat. The port's first light, in the 1860s, was only a wick lamp hoisted on a flag mast. A 14 m octagonal tower followed in 1865 within the port premises, and it gained optical equipment from Chance Bros. of Birmingham in 1876. After the lighthouse expert D. Alan Stevenson recommended a move in 1927, a new site was eventually chosen in 1964-65, and the present light was commissioned on 1 July 1967.

The cylindrical tower of reinforced concrete has a D-shaped cross section and horizontal bands of black and white. Its occulting white light is briefly eclipsed once every 15 seconds and has been automated since a 1996 upgrade. Under India's Lighthouse Tourism initiative it became a heritage and tourism site, opening to the public on 1 July 2023 with visitor facilities, educational exhibits and panoramic views of the coast.
