Somnath Temple stands on the shore of the Arabian Sea at Prabhas Patan and is counted as the first of Lord Shiva's twelve Jyotirlingas. The site has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over its long history. The present temple, in the Chalukyan style with a tall shikhara and carved sandstone, was finished in 1951; Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel drove the rebuilding, and President Rajendra Prasad performed the consecration.
Pilgrims come throughout the year for worship and rituals, and many also visit the nearby Triveni Sangam, where three rivers are believed to meet the sea. A promenade runs beside the temple along the water, and a sound-and-light show in the complex tells its history. The temple is open all year.
