The story

The Jami Masjid in Mangrol, Gujarat, was once the town's Friday mosque, the congregational mosque for the weekly prayer, and is now partly in ruins. It dates from around 1384, during the rule of the Gujarat Sultanate, and is protected as a Monument of National Importance.

Its back wall holds nine mihrabs, the niches that mark the direction of prayer. Beneath the mosque lies an extensive underground vav, or stepwell, built as part of the same structure.
