The story

Veda Peak is the highest point in Mon district of Nagaland, close to the border with Myanmar, in country long inhabited by the Konyak Nagas. From the top the view takes in forested ridges and valleys, and on clear days the Brahmaputra and the plains of Assam are said to be visible.

The Konyaks are known for their warrior past, facial tattoos, wood carving and jewellery, which can still be seen in the villages below the peak. Its height made it a lookout during past conflicts in the region. Konyak lore holds that warriors once performed rituals on the summit to ask for strength before battle and that ancestral spirits dwell there, and another story tells of treasure hidden somewhere on the mountain.
