Kisama, also called the Naga Heritage Village, lies about 10 km from Kohima and was created to keep alive the customs and building traditions of Nagaland's tribes. Its name combines syllables from the two neighbouring villages, Kigwema and Phesama. The site is best known as the venue of the Hornbill Festival each December, and through the year it is also used for events held by local societies and unions.
The complex consists of 16 morungs, one for each tribe, built in their own styles. The morung was once the communal house where young people learned skills and heard the community's stories. There are also ceremonial gateways and a central arena for dances and rituals. During the festival the morungs come alive with tribal performances, craft displays, traditional food stalls and Naga games, and stalls sell textiles, jewellery and carvings. Modest dress is expected, and people should be asked before they are photographed.
