The story

The Nagaland State Museum stands on Bayavu Hill in Kohima and has been open to visitors since 1970. It is one of two museums run by the state's Directorate of Art and Culture and sets out the history and social life of the Naga tribes through objects, models and dioramas.

The galleries show clan motifs, necklaces and beads, costumes, inscriptions and models of morungs that compare the building styles of different tribes. A section on music displays instruments made from bamboo and buffalo horn, and an art gallery hangs work by local painters. Among the dioramas are a Zeliang woman performing the Butterfly Dance and an Angami couple calling on relatives during Sekrenyi, the festival that opens the lunar year with feasts and exchanges of gifts.
