01 — The story

The story

This Commonwealth war cemetery sits on Garrison Hill in the centre of Kohima and commemorates the soldiers killed in the Battle of Kohima. In the spring of 1944 Allied troops fought Japanese forces here for more than two months to stop their push into India, and the hill itself was part of the battlefield. From the terraced lawns there are wide views over the town and the surrounding hills.

Designed by Colin St Clair Oakes, the cemetery holds 1,420 Commonwealth graves from 1939–45, plus a single grave unconnected with the war. The 2nd Division memorial carries the well-known epitaph that opens with the words "When you go home", and there are memorials to the 2nd Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment and other units around the hill. At the top stands the Kohima Cremation Memorial, which names 917 Hindu and Sikh soldiers who were cremated according to their faith.
