The story

Pulie Badze is a peak just outside Kohima, and the wildlife sanctuary around it covers about 9.23 sq km of forest belonging to the Japfu range. The woods act as an important watershed and are tied closely to the culture of the Angami Nagas. Local tradition says the mountain takes its name from Pulie, a farmer who became a spirit after a fateful meeting with a snake.

More than 250 plant species have been recorded here, from moss-hung old trees to the rhododendrons whose red flowers cover the summit in season. Mammals include the Himalayan black bear and the hoolock gibbon, and birdwatchers come in hope of the endangered Blyth's tragopan. The trail up the peak is a popular hike from the capital and gives wide views of the surrounding hills.
