01 — The story

The story

Thiruvaragunamangai Perumal Temple, also called Vijayasana Perumal, stands at Natham on the Tiruchendur–Tirunelveli route, on the bank of the Thamirabarani. It is the second of the Nava Tirupati, nine Divya Desam temples on the river, and is known as the Chandran Sthalam. Here Vishnu bears the name Vijayasana Perumal, and Lakshmi is Varagunavalli. Legend says Vishnu appeared here for the sage Romesar after long penance, and for the sage Vedavit, who asked him to remain here as Vijayasanan. The name may come from the Pandya king Varaguna, though this is uncertain.

A granite wall pierced by a five-tier gopuram encloses the shrines, with a sixteen-pillared hall in front. In the sanctum Vijayasana Perumal is seated, flanked by both consorts. The temple follows the Tenkalai tradition, and its main festivals are the ten-day Vaikuntha Ekadashi in Margali and Nammalvar's birth festival, when Garudasevai is held for all nine temples.
