The story

Srivaikuntanathan Perumal Temple, also called the Srivaikuntam or Kallapiran temple, is a Vishnu temple in the town of Srivaikuntam in Thoothukudi district, 22 km from Tirunelveli. It counts among the 108 Divya Desams and among the Nava Tirupatis on the Tamiraparani, second in importance among them after Alwarthirunagari, and it is the group's Navagraha temple for Surya. Vishnu stands in the sanctum as Vaikunthanathar, in shaligrama stone, club in hand, with Adishesha shading him.

Legends explain his other names. As Pal Pandian, he was found buried after a royal cow kept bathing the spot with its milk, and as Kallapiran he took the form of a robber chief, Kaladushana, to save him from a Pandya king. Pandya kings of the 12th to 14th centuries left grants recorded in its inscriptions. In 1801 the British used the temple as a fort against the forces of Veerapandiya Kattabomman. A granite wall 580 ft by 396 ft encloses five acres, the rajagopuram rises 110 ft, and the Thiruvengadamudayan hall holds life-size 16th-century sculptures.
