The story

The Khutba Periya Palli, also called Al Jami'ul Kabeer or the Big Juma Mosque, is a Friday mosque in Kayalpattinam, Thoothukudi district. Its founding is dated to 842 CE and credited to Muhammad Khalji; Sultan Sayyid Jamaluddin rebuilt it in 737 AH (1336–37), and reports in 2021 said it was once more being rebuilt.

Like other mosques in the town, it shows how Dravidian architecture shaped Islamic building here, and it is also known as Aayirangal Thoon Palli. Beside it lies a large cemetery holding the tombs of the Madurai Sultans, a short-lived 14th-century sultanate on the Coromandel Coast that lasted less than fifty years before the Vijayanagara Empire ended it. It is claimed that 25,000 saints are buried in the cemetery.
