The Thirupuliyangudi Perumal Temple stands on the bank of the Thamirabarani river on the Tiruchendur–Tirunelveli route, 22 km from Tirunelveli. It counts among the 108 Divya Desams and belongs to the Nava Tirupati, a group of nine Vishnu temples on the river revered by Nammalvar, and is linked with Budha among the Navagrahas. Here Vishnu bears the name Bhumipalar, and Lakshmi is Pulingudivalli. Legend says Bhudevi, hurt that Vishnu spent his time on earth with Sridevi, withdrew to the netherworld so that all life began to fail, until Vishnu went down to bring her back, earning the name Bhumipalar, guardian of the earth.
A granite wall encloses the temple, which has a flat rajagopuram and two prakarams. The large image of Vishnu has a lotus rising from his navel bearing Brahma, and the deity's feet can be seen through a passage. The ten-day Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Nammalvar's birth festival, with Garudasevai for all nine temples, are the main events.
