The story

The Valiya Koonambaikulam Temple stands at Koonambaikulam near Vadakkevila in Kollam district. It is dedicated to Bhadrakali, known here as Koonambaikulathamma, 'mother of Koonambaikulam', and is counted among the oldest temples in Kerala. A temple trust runs it, and also owns an engineering college at Parippally.

Worship runs daily from early morning until night. The main event of the year is the Kumbha Bharani Maholsavam, held on the Bharani star in the month of Kumbham, which falls in February or March. During the festival thousands of women take part in the Chandra Pongal ritual.
