The story

Paravur Kayal is a lake of about 6.6 square kilometres at Paravur in Kollam district. Small as it is, it is where the Ithikkara River ends and belongs to the network of lagoons and canals known as the Kerala backwaters. Since the late 19th century it has been linked to Edava and Ashtamudi lakes by the Trivandrum-Shoranur canal.

The most striking sight is where the lake comes right up to the sea, with only a narrow road dividing the two, a view travellers pass along the way. Mangroves grow around parts of the shore, and the lake is becoming one of the district's newer visitor spots.
