Sivagiri Mutt at Varkala is devoted to Sri Narayana Guru, the 19th-century saint and social reformer known for the principle of one caste, one religion and one God for humankind. The institution has worked for social equality and spread education and literacy, which shaped modern Kerala. Each December thousands of people arrive for the Sivagiri Pilgrimage in his honour.
The mutt sits on a low hill that followers consider blessed by the Guru. A statue of him stands at the entrance to the inner courtyard. The complex has a prayer hall set aside for meditation, a library of books on spirituality and philosophy, and a museum with objects and memorabilia from his life and teaching.
