Valara lies on the Kochi–Madurai National Highway between Neriamangalam, on the eastern edge of Ernakulam district, and Adimali, about 14 km from Adimali in Idukki district. Its main sight is the Valara waterfalls, a series of falls surrounded by dense green forest.
The water comes down the Deviyar, also called the Thottiyar, a small river that rises in the Western Ghats, flows through Adimali panchayat and joins the Periyar. The Kerala State Electricity Board has planned the Thottiyar hydroelectric project on this river, with a weir and tunnel feeding a power house before the water returns to the stream. The Cheeyappara waterfall is close by.
