The story

Viripara Weir is a low masonry diversion weir across the Upper Kallar river, a tributary of the Pooyankutty, in Mankulam village, Idukki district. Completed in 1961 to boost the Neriamangalam Hydroelectric Project, it sends water from the Upper Kallar through a short tunnel into the Kallarkutty reservoir.

The site is a favourite picnic spot, and two waterfalls are found here, Viripara Falls and Nakshathrakuthu Falls.
