01 — The story

The story

Vairatgad is a hill fort near Wai, built in the 11th century by King Bhoj of the Shilahara dynasty. When Shivaji took the Wai region he added Vairatgad and nearby Pandavgad to his kingdom, and the fort served as a military post during his reign, with Sardar Pilaji Gole as its killedar from 1673 to 1689. The British captured it in 1818.

The summit is very small. A ruined bastion guards the entrance, and to the left of the main gate, lower down the cliff, five or six cisterns are cut into the rock, with a small cave to the right. On top are the remains of old buildings and a Hanuman temple, with an idol of Hanuman seated outside.
