01 — The story

The story

Dhom Dam, a combined earthfill and gravity structure, crosses the Krishna River near Wai, in Satara district. Work started in 1976 and ended in 1982, and the dam holds back Dhom Lake, which stretches for about 20 km. Its water serves farms and industry and supplies drinking water to Wai, Panchgani, Mahabaleshwar and nearby villages, and a power station in its base produces 4 MW.

The village of Dhom, around 8 km from Wai among the Sahyadri hills, carries the name Dakshin Kashi and was once known as Virat Nagari. It is noted across Maharashtra for its ghats on the Krishna and its temples, above all the Shree Narsinha temple on the Krishna Ghat. Films including Gangaajal, Omkara, Dabangg and Singham have been shot here.
