01 — The story

The story

Upvan Lake lies in the Pokhran area of Thane, one of the largest lakes in the city, with the Yeoor Hills rising behind it. It was rebuilt by J. K. Singhania to supply water to the Raymond textile mill, and he also built the Ganesha temple on its shore. Once the main source of water for the whole city, it is now used mostly for leisure, and the Thane mayor's official residence stands beside it.

The lakeside is a popular spot for an evening stroll, known locally as a lovers' haunt. It hosts the Sanskruti Arts Festival, which draws more than 50,000 visitors, and on the last day of Ganeshotsav thousands of Ganpati idols are brought here for immersion, a striking sight.
