01 — The story

The story

The Tripolia Gates are two matching gateways on GT Karnal Road in North Delhi, standing 250 metres apart between Rana Pratap Bagh and Gur Mandi. Each has three passages.

They were built in 1728–29 by Nazir Mahaldar Khan, who superintended the women's quarters in the palace of the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah, to mark the two ends of the approach to a market. The northern gate has been restored, while work on the southern one is still going on.
