01 — The story

The story

Nicholson Cemetery is a Christian cemetery at Kashmere Gate in Delhi, in the Civil Lines just outside Old Delhi, close to the metro station, with the Inter State Bus Terminal to its east. It opened in 1857, when the heavy losses of the Siege of Delhi created the need for a new burial ground, and is owned by St. James' Church. Its earlier names were Kashmere Gate Cemetery and Old Delhi Military Cemetery; it was renamed in the early 1900s after Brigadier-General John Nicholson.

Nicholson commanded the main storming party in the assault on Delhi on 14 September 1857, was shot in the chest and died of his wounds on 23 September, aged 35. He was among the first buried here, under a tombstone cut from a white marble slab taken from the Red Fort. Other graves include those of Camille Bulcke and Philip Salkeld. The British High Commission restored the cemetery in 2006, and ghost stories cling to the place.
