The story

Chandni Chowk is the main market of Old Delhi, laid out in the 17th century when the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan moved his capital from Agra. His daughter Jahanara Begum designed the bazaar, founded in 1650, as a grand avenue lined with havelis and important buildings, and royal processions passed along it.

The original square was half-moon shaped, with trees, canals and pools, and the street ran 1,520 yards in length with a width of 40 yards. Its name means Moonlight Square, after the moon's reflection in a large pool. Silver traders did well here, giving it the nickname Silver Street. Today it is a crowded network of narrow lanes.
