Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in Delhi and one of the biggest in India. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commissioned it, and about 5,000 workers built it over six years between 1650 and 1656. Its courtyard has room for up to 25,000 people at prayer.
The building is laid out symmetrically, with tall minarets, marble domes and carved walls typical of Mughal work at its height. The mosque also keeps relics of deep importance to Muslims, among them a hair said to belong to the Prophet Muhammad and a copy of the Quran written on deer skin.
