01 — The story

The story

Feroz Shah Kotla is the ruined citadel of Firozabad, the fifth city of Delhi, which Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq founded beside the Yamuna in the 14th century after water ran short in the older capital. Also called Kushk-i-Firoz, it is an irregular polygon inside a rectangular rubble wall, and it was the first citadel in Delhi split into separate functional zones, a plan the Mughals later adopted.

Its best-known feature is a polished sandstone pillar of Emperor Ashoka brought from Topra Kalan in Haryana and inscribed in Brahmi script. Beside it stands the Tughlaq Jami Masjid, which so impressed Timur in 1398 that he had a mosque modelled on it built at home. To the northwest is a baoli, the only round stepwell in Delhi and one where well and tank are joined.
