The story

Raj Ghat is the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi near the Yamuna, built on an old ghat at the place where his last rites were held on 31 January 1948, the day after his assassination. Its plain, restrained design is meant to reflect the simplicity of his life.

At its centre is a black marble platform with clean, undecorated lines, set in landscaped gardens and sheltered by a canopy modelled on a chhatri. Vanu G. Bhuta designed the memorial, and the gardens were laid out by Alick Percy-Lancaster, then the Government of India's Superintendent of Horticultural Operations.
