The story

Coronation Park lies on Burari Road near Nirankari Sarovar in Delhi. It was the venue of the Delhi Durbars: in 1877 Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India here, in 1903 the accession of Edward VII was marked with a fortnight of parades and a vast tented camp, and on 12 December 1911 George V, the first reigning British monarch to attend a Durbar, held his coronation Durbar here with Queen Mary. At that last event the move of the capital from Calcutta to Delhi was announced.

The ground was chosen partly for Delhi's standing as the old Mughal capital, and lies near the ridge where the British won a major victory in 1857. Today it holds a large statue of George V, brought here in the mid-1960s from its earlier place opposite India Gate. It faces the Coronation Memorial obelisk, which marks the 1911 Durbar, when the King laid the foundation stone of New Delhi.
