Tonglu is among the higher points on the Singalila Ridge, with a small settlement inside Singalila National Park, in Darjeeling district close to the border with Nepal. It is a roadside halt on the trekking route from Manebhanjan to Sandakphu, which at 3,636 metres is the highest point in West Bengal, and offers several guest houses and homestays for trekkers and tourists heading that way.
In the 1800s the place was known as Tonglo. The botanist Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker made many plant-hunting journeys through Darjeeling and Sikkim. The surrounding Darjeeling hills are tea country, with 78 tea gardens growing and largely exporting Darjeeling tea, and the industry employs much of the local population.
