01 — The story

The story

The Rock Garden, also called Barbotey Rock Garden, and Ganga Maya Park are two neighbouring spots in the hills about 10 km from Darjeeling. Both are fairly recent. The Rock Garden was developed by the tourism department of the Gorkha Hill Council at a time when the hill station needed new reasons to draw visitors back.

The road down to the valley has many tight bends and passes slopes planted with tea. The garden itself is built in terraces around a natural waterfall, with a hill stream tumbling over the rocks, flower beds and seating laid out on several levels, and open ground where families picnic.

About 3 km further along the road is Ganga Maya Park, which follows a lively mountain stream crossed by small footbridges.
