01 — The story

The story

Lebong Race Course lies in the Lebong Valley on the eastern side of Darjeeling, with the Himalaya as its backdrop. The British laid it out in the 19th century to entertain the colonial residents of the hill station, and it has since become part of the town's sporting and cultural identity.

Unlike courses built on level plains, this one follows the natural, uneven ground of the valley, and at 480 m it is far shorter than a standard track. The stands have sloping roofs and wooden fronts. Races are held each year and draw both residents, for many of whom attending is a family custom, and outside visitors; the meets have also brought on local riding talent.

The area has suffered from neglect, encroachment on its land and pressure from building. Local authorities and community groups now work together on its upkeep and on protecting the surrounding environment.
