01 — The story

The story

Officially the Rangeet Valley Passenger Cable Car, the Darjeeling Ropeway carries visitors from the edge of Darjeeling down into the valley of the Rangeet. It began running in 1968 and is described as the first cable car system in India. It was originally meant to make it easier to reach the tea gardens in the valleys below, and it is now mainly a sightseeing ride.

The line covers about 2.5 km with 16 cars. Passengers board at Singamari, some 3 km from Chowk Bazaar in the town, and descend from roughly 7,000 ft towards Singla Bazar near the Rammam River. On the way the cars pass over tea estates, forest and rivers, with the snows of Kanchenjunga visible in the distance on clear days.
