The story

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling is India's largest high-altitude zoo, set at around 7,000 ft on a rocky mountain slope. It opened in 1958 and is named after Padmaja Naidu, daughter of the poet and freedom fighter Sarojini Naidu. The zoo focuses on animals of the Eastern Himalaya and is widely regarded as one of the best in the country.

Its conservation breeding work covers endangered species including the red panda, snow leopard and Tibetan wolf. Visitors can also see clouded leopards, Himalayan black bears, Himalayan tahr, blue sheep, goral, musk deer, barking deer and sambar.

A large round aviary holds colourful birds such as Lady Amherst's pheasant, ring-necked pheasants, rose-ringed parakeets, hill mynas and blue-and-gold macaws.
