01 — The story

The story

Tarkash Mahal is a palace inside Bidar Fort that carries the marks of two dynasties, the Bahmanis and the Barid Shahis who followed them; the Barid emblem appears on its upper storeys. Records of the Bijapur and Golconda kingdoms mention it together with Gagan Mahal, from a time when rival courts gave their palaces matching names.

The building is only partly intact. Its main hall keeps stucco and tile decoration, and the smaller rooms on either side were once lined with encaustic tiles. An older parapet visible on the second-floor walls suggests the third floor was added later. The ground floor was used to store goods and ammunition, and rockets were found in these rooms in the early 19th century.
