01 — The story

The story

Rangin Mahal, the 'coloured palace', is a royal building inside Bidar Fort named for the many-hued tiles that once covered its walls. It went up during the reign of Ali Barid Shah, between 1542 and 1580, a ruler known for his love of Persian poetry and art. It was also called the Queen's Palace or Rani Mahal, as the queen and her women attendants lived here.

Each of its two storeys holds a hall with several rooms around it. Its decoration blends Persian, Hindu and Islamic ideas: tiled and stucco walls, carved woodwork, mother-of-pearl inlay, floral patterns, stone carving and calligraphy including verses from the Quran.
