The Gumbad Darwaza and the Sharza Darwaza are two of the main entrances in the fortifications of old Bidar. Both were built as ceremonial gates and as defensive points, where guards could watch the approaches to the walled city.
The Gumbad Darwaza takes its name from the dome on top, which doubled as a lookout. Its large central arch is flanked by smaller ones, all carved with ornament, and the gate is built of local stone. The Sharza Darwaza, or Lion Gate, is named for the lions once carved on its front as emblems of strength; some of that sculpture has worn away. Its wide arch and sheer bulk show a mix of local building traditions with Islamic arches and motifs. Over the centuries both gates have seen sieges and changes of dynasty in Bidar.
